Rollovers & How to Avoid Them

More than half of all truck driver deaths in crashes are the result of truck rollovers.  When cargo is piled up in a truck, the "center of gravity" moves higher up from the road, making the truck easier to turn over.  Fully loaded rigs are ten-times more likely to roll over in a crash than empty rigs.  If you are a driver, you know the dangers of rollovers and how to avoid them, but not everyone knows about trucks and besides, a little reminder never hurt anyone.  So consider this information for the non-drivers and as a reminder for those who are drivers.  Let's take a look...

What are the causes of rollovers?
  • over-acceleration, causing loss of control
  • high wind conditions
  • shifting of loads
  • poorly balanced loads
  • pulling multiple trailers (triples are 3.5% more likely to over turn than a 5-axle tractor-semi
  • quick lane changes
  • turning too fast around corners, on ramps and off ramps

How do drivers avoid jackknives?
  • keep cargo as low to the ground as possible
  • drive slowly around turns
  • try to keep cargo centered and spread out as much as possible in the trailer
  • avoid quick lane changes
  • steer gently and smoothly when pulling a trailer
  • slow down before going into a turn
  • control your speed (loaded or empty) and brake early
  • do not drive fatigued

It is better to prevent than to cure.
